ASUS brand routers and Linksys tend to perform really well. Just get a wireless N router, maybe with 5.0Ghz support if you have devices that can use it.

I picked up a Linksys E3200 a year or so ago and it's worked fine for me. Connected to my Motorola SURFboard SB6121.

Four Gigabit LAN ports
Wireless N
Dual-band 2.4 and 5.0Ghz

Good suggestions.. I am looking also at these two:

Asus RT-N66U
Nighthawk AC1900

What are some cool things you can do these days that you could not 10 years ago? I am that behind the times as far as routers go.

You can install tomato firmware or ddwrt for extra options. Routers aren't all that 'fun' but with custom firmware you can boost antenna signal strength (shortens router life) amongst many options that are not available at stock.

So I still have a Linksys WRT54G ... maybe this firmware can help this old router out.. or at least give me a playground to fool around with after I buy and install a new router.

yeah I installed DD WRT on my old WRT54GS with no issues, boosted the antenna strength about 20% noticed stronger connection with devices further away, but that router failed within a year with the extra power settings. so it really is for fun more so than an enhancement. I Think the best upgrade you can get is this (a router with replaceable antennas) and some of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5H6...

this is better than any software tweak or enhancement. IF you have big house you can set up an AP Repeater/bridge between the two routers (which is fun and a good learning experience) but the performance takes a hit in latency, it has its specific use (to extend range in large large space) but its not faster to do so.
