It would help to know what you are upgrading from.

Something always bottlenecks; the real questions are how hard, how often and which component accounts for the worst of it. This can vary wildly between games and even between scenes within the same game.

If I were you and felt that the GPU is the single biggest bottleneck in my system and I wanted a 280X because I know for sure my current GPU is grossly under-powered (meaning the GPU upgrade is definitely required regardless of the CPU situation), I would get the 280X and not worry about CPU bottlenecking until I can see it for myself and decide how much of a priority I want to put on it.

The 280X is not particularly overkill even for modern mainstream CPUs in most games so I would not worry much about the i7-870 being a horrible mismatch.

The 870 should run the 280x just fine, especially if you're willing to overclock the cpu a little.

You should definitely see a fairly significant difference since the 280X is about three times as fast.
