when i have only chrome open, looks like it i've already used ~4 ram...

same thing with how much cpu, though i'll ask in a year or so... or something..

That's going to depend on usage. You could boot your system and check e-mails/view text based web sites with just 2GB of RAM installed. For normal, non-gaming usage (surfing the web, youtube videos, checking emails, etc...), I'd probably recommend no less than 4GB of RAM. If you're a gamer/multi-tasker (games/videos in the background while surfing other websites/checking e-mails), I'd recommend between 6GB and 8GB of RAM. If you're a multi-tasker, video editor, work with large raw data files, and/or run multiple services simultaneously, then the recommendation would be for anywhere between 8GB and 64GB of RAM.

The same goes for the CPU. What CPU to get is going to depend on the system's intended usage.
