Hey fellas, thought I would ask a few questions to all you knowledgeable folk on here! :)

One of the more challenging aspects of building a PC is picking the right graphics card, with all the different models and manufacturers and re branded cards out there, I cant seem to settle on one.

Not looking for anything absolutely amazing in performance and benchmarks but something that will run most games on ultra settings gracefully. I'm looking for something between the R9 270 to 280X range and everything in between.

So for instance I have seen good reviews on a MSI R9 270 OC Gaming edition card and that seems to trump a lot of cards in that category. Also I have seen good things about the Sapphire 280X Tri X / Go toxic cards but also that manufacturer seems to come under scrutiny by some, while ASUS cards seem reliable and liked by many.

I just want some honest opinions on which cards are the best in their respective categories - performance/overclocking/reliabilty-wise. Also would I get away with using the MSI model I have mentioned above or should I be looking at something better in performance in the 7900 series, for say.

All views, opinions and experiences welcome! Thanks for your time.

Most of the choice between manufacturers and their individual variants boils down to individual preferences and price.

All of the major GPU board partners follow AMD's reference design quite closely give or take a partial board re-layout, small tweaks and different cooling solutions so the overall quality and performance is fairly uniform regardless of which board manufacturer you pick - not counting factory-OC variants.

If factory-OC is something you might be interested in, that is just one more lever manufacturers can use to sway the balance between personal preference vs performance vs cost.

I personally do not really have a personal preference for GPUs in terms of manufacturer. I buy whatever gives be the best bang-per-buck at the time I feel like I require an upgrade.

I see, thanks for your input. So do you have a recommendation on what GPU will give me the best bang for my buck at this current time?

If you have serious expectations of Ultra-detail gaming, you probably want to look at the R9-280/285/280X. At this point in time though, you may want to see how prices will shake down with the 285's introduction - the 285 might become a cost-effective alternative to the 280.

If you have to buy a GPU right now and want an AMD-based one, the R9-280 at ~$220 would be a much better bet than the R9-270 at ~$180.
