Okay so basically I have windows 7 ultimate on my thumb drive and i have an old 500gb hdd with xp and a ton of files on it that im putting into a new build. I want to install my windows 7 and get rid of all the old files that are on there, do I have to do something to the hdd before I try installing 7 or should the windows 7 setup take care of any old files and get rid of them?

Installing Windows from a USB drive or retail DVD will give you the option to format the hard drive that Windows will be installed on.

Yeah so what it means is that no, you don't need to do anything before. While installing you will format the drive anyway.
