What does CPU (Overclocking) do in games?

I have a GTX 760 which I have overclocked moderately to 118MHz core clock, which has increased my performance in games considerably.

However, when I overclock my CPU (AMD FX 6300) from the base 3.5GHz to 4.2GHz I see no increase in gaming performance.

Running Unigine valley benchmark my overclock stays at a constant 4.2GHz and never going above 50 degrees C, but I don't see any increase in frame rates.

I thought a good CPU speed was suppose to help games, and in particular, open world games, am I missing something or doing something wrong, please help.

Most games don't use high enough resources from the CPU to see any real difference, unless the game is extremely highly CPU intensive (BF4, Arma3 etc). Otherwise, you will possibly see an extra frame or two. But overclocking the CPU honestly isn't needed unless you're trying to get out of a bottleneck or rendering
