Is my CPU or GPU bottlenecking my games?

I have an AMD Athlon II x2 245 Dual-Core 2.9 GHz (can oc it) processor and a nVidia GeForce Gtx 470, and 4 gigs of ddr3 ram.I want to know if my cpu is the problem or if it's the gpu, so i conducted a test and ran ac4 on low to medium and got 24 fps. Then i got it up to high and got from 22 to 24. In the task manager the cpu was never under 90% load while playing while my gpu never exceeded 86C (don't know how to check the load on my gpu) so if it is from my cpu, i will need some suggestion's for a new one and if its from the gpu i will have to live with it.

Solution
Yeah, those processors will work but I think those are not your typical FX-8320/FX-8350 models, they might be the special models which use 95W and something else special about them but Fx-6300 will be decent enough. Enjoy your computer upgrade

Your CPU is pretty outdated. If I were you, I would consider saving up to build a new computer or at least partially a new computer (new processor, motherboard, some other parts that you may think about upgrading).

I suggest the FX-6300 processors or at least an i3 processor for that card but try to go for a FX-8xxx processor or i5 4th gen.
This means you will need a newer motherboard and probably need newer RAM (DDR3)

The bottleneck is definitely your CPU, no doubt about that.

The AM3 socket is older, so your best option will be buying a CPU used. One of the best options on that socket, taking your motherboard's power management into account, is the Phenom II 955. It's not a great CPU, but it should remove *most* of the bottleneck from your GTX 470, and if you go higher (like the Phenom II 965, for example) you could run into power problems with your mobo chipset, since your current CPU is only a 65w TDP and probably has a matching mobo.

The i3s outperform the FX-8xxx in Assassin's Creed 4.

Yeah, the i3 is pretty good mostly because of the single core performance, not strong as the FX-8xxx multithreading performance though.
Overall, In other games, the performance between the i3 and FX-8xxx will be different cases but for the AC games definitely Intel i3's are better than the AMD FX series.

I forgot about the Phenom II x4 955. Those are still relevant processors these days. @OP, if you do not have a lot of money to upgrade, at least upgrade to this CPU for starters.

[strike]EDIT: Oh yea, make sure your motherboard will support 125W CPUs, just in case. I know that there are some motherboards that support only up to 95W.[/strike] Rationale cleared it up.

That revision of Phenom II 955 is 95w, which is why I recommended it, only the first revision was 125w.

Oops, I forgot about that your processor is one of the more recent processors. I'm not sure what made me think it was so old but then again, I was answering your question pretty late.

Anyway, your CPU is AM3 so your board shoguld support DDR3. So you should be fine with the RAM and the motherboard, you can definitely keep those things and just upgrade the CPU to another AMD CPU that supports AM3. I can find you a decent one soon.

Well my mobo already support am3+ you can suggest newer ones if they are cheap enough.

Yeah that processor is quite cheap but i was looking at the fx 6300 which here costs 200 leva (132 dollars) is the fx 6300 good? will it run good along with my gtx 470? Any suggestions are appreciated :)

FX-6300 is decent, it should work on that motherboard. It is quite a bit faster than the 955 but you will be paying a bit more. Though in the states, you can get it cheaper (around $100) as opposed to $80 for the 955 but where you live, the price gap is even bigger.

http://www.cpu-world.com/Compare/155/AMD_FX-Series_FX-6300_vs_AMD_Phenom_II_X4_955_(125W__rev._C2).html

Here is a list of CPUs that should work with your board.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/970%20Extreme4/?cat=CPU

You can also go for the FX-6350 though only if the price difference between that and the FX-6300 is very small.

Don't see the FX-8320 or FX-8350 CPUs supported though so that's a no go.

I couldn't find the exact 95W model which is supposedly a bit slower than the 125W so expect the FX-6300 to be faster than the Phenom II X4 955 95W model.

I believe the FX-6300 is 95W so your motherboard will definitely work with it.

Actually if you type FD837EWMW8KHK its a amd fx 8370 while FD832EWMW8KHK is the amd fx 8320 but i don't think i'll be needing 8 cores soon so i guess i'll go with the fx 6300 someday. Anyway thanks for your time. :)

Well i just got the fx 6350 black edition and i am impressed with it now Assassin's Creed runs with 30 fps on high.I don't know why i dont get like 40 or 50 or even 60 fps like my friend. Still a nice processor.

The FX-6350 is a nice modern CPU for most games. I'd have recommended an FX CPU right away if I'd known you had an AM3+ motherboard, but since your current CPU is AM3 I assumed the mobo would be AM3 as well.

I don't think it would bottleneck a GTX 470, given that a GTX 470 is now equivalent to a GTX 750 (non-Ti). Chances are your performance is being limited by your GPU now (as it's supposed to be).

So that means that my setups is ok now? Nothing else to worry about? And how much longer do you think this pc will hold?. Oh, i forgot to ask should i get 4 more ram to make it 8 or stay with 4?

The 4GB of RAM should be okay. Are your graphic drivers up to date?

I did a bit of looking around and saw two threads that may be helpful so you should definitely look at these two if you have not yet done so.
