From my last post of my motherboard making a high pitch whining noise, it is slowly becoming more frequent and increasing in duration when it makes the whining noise (can only be described as sounding like its crying). Although it may carry on fine, I do not feel comfortable with it and don't want any down time if it decides to fail. However I am currently using an i5-2500k, Sandy Bridge and a MSI z68s-g43 motherboard. Although LGA1155 motherboards are still available (not as many), I can only find Z77 chipset motherboards, with what I thought was for Ivy Bridge CPU's. Could I get a Z77 motherboard to replace a Z68, if so which one? Or would it be more advisable to wait a bit longer and get a new CPU (haswell) and motherboard?

Solution
That depends, if you dont want to get a new processor and motherboard the 2500k is still a great chip and there probably wont be a huge performance difference. You could look up some performance comparisons etc but it really depends weather you are willing to save up for longer for the new cpu+mobo

Hey again, probably does not matter either way because the 2500k is still decent. I would save up and get a haswell refresh chip and z97 board but either way. Most z77 boards should be compatible with the 2500k but check manufacturer websites, if you don't feel comfortable with your current board and cant buy a new cpu and mobo right now just get a z77 board thats compatible with your cpu

Thanks, would you recommend saving up for a new processor and motherboard then instead of buying a Z77 motherboard? Would there be much of a performance difference?

im still happy with my 2500k, can't remember the last time i kept a cpu this long. besides, im only @4ghz, if i need to i can bump it up to 4.5. if that is not enough then games are probably too unoptiomized (given you have a good gpu already), or that games finally utilizes more than 4cores properly
