In most games - short freezes - memory/hard drive issue?

So in most games I'm getting terrible 1-3 sec freezes. Usually when looking around or walking into new areas that it has to load. Battlefield 4 runs 60+ fps on ultra settings, even in multiplayer, but when im on a server for more then a minute suddenly these short freezes start here too (which makes it unplayable as it keeps going).

There's alot of other games that keep doing this, Planetside 2 is an example, but not every game becomes unplayable. Usually if I set some graphics settings lower it will be fine (but again, I'm able to run the game at ultra or highest settings with smooth fps, but I have to lower it because of the short freezes).

I recently upgraded my CPU, motherboard and GPU. Everything runs better, but the short freezes still persist. Is this a RAM or HD issue?

I'm using Windows 8.1 64bit, got 4GB of RAM (I believe at 1333mhz, which might be a little slow?) and my HD has 1TB of space. My current RAM is from Kingston I believe, got this a couple of years ago. My HD is a SATA drive, 1TB. Can't find more information about it.

My new system has a FX-6300 CPU and AMD Radeon R9 270x GPU, btw.

Any ideas what I can do to improve this? I'm looking into upgrading both my HD and RAM, but short on cash atm so I'll have to wait a bit. Is there anything "software wise", like tweaks, I can do to make things faster?

Solution
I would expect that the RAM is indeed your bottleneck. For now the only thing that might make a small difference, is manually setting your paging file to custom size: Initial size 6144, Maximum size 10240 and disable any unneeded background programs and services when playing games.

The first two things I would check are that all of your components and cables are properly seated, loose SATA connections for example can cause freezing. Second thing would be the RAM, 4GB 1333MHz could be an issue as you're running a 64-bit OS. Check what background programs you have running that perhaps don't need to be.

Also check things like your page file, run CCleaner and Defraggler. If the problem is overheating, this should be fairly obvious with a quick check of temps (and you'll be able to hear the fans going crazy trying to keep things cool).

Components + cables are correctly seated, no overheating problem (checked all the temperatures), how/what do I do for the page file? Ran defrag, didnt seem to have any effect.

I'm beginning to suspect that my RAM is the bottleneck here.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

Is there actually a way to overclock your RAM? Maybe that would give better results too?

So overclocking from 1333 to 1666 for example is not a good idea? They're regular RAM sticks from Kingston, pretty budget I think (didnt even realize RAM could have cooling with em, and these certainly dont)

lol value ram don't' overclock unless you have heat spreaders on and some fans.. at least. as well overclocking ram can lead to more errors, unstable system, and really you dont' get much difference between ram speeds, the timming also starts to coming into effect. cl9 could drop to cl11 not worth it

Hello again bad_eyes83 :p this guy's jumping my replies all over today lol. Simply put, I agree with him this time.

My RAM is running on custom clocks at 1884MHz and maintains timings of 9-9-9-24 at 1.5V stable, but this is not value RAM, although Kingston do make some good stuff.

Yea I know Kingston is pretty good, but it's value ram so I guess it's not worth the try. Guess RAM is on the list for next upgrades. I heard HyperX from Kingston was pretty good (2x 4gb)? Perhaps I can find something cheap somewhere.

For now I hope the pagefile update proves to help atleast a bit.

lol park, its all good, you know what yo are doing obviously, lots of people don't thought that is the basis i give people to an extent, less headache :p

Drhankey get rid of the value ram lol get a 2 x 4gb kit of ddr 3 1600 or higher, that will help when you get the money i understand budget im on a pension myself, use pcpartspicker that iste is great it saved me oer 100 bucks on my build (that is a quick guess i know its more than 100 but not sure how much)
