Good Card that can handle 4k but not directly...e.g., HTPC -> Receiver -> 4K TV

So far I've seen only posts about 4k cards that need HDMI 2.0 spec -- and corresponding cable -- to work with 4k TVs that have one panel and operate at 60hz refresh.

But in the world of HTPCs where we have some intermediary like a 4K pass-thru (possibly upconvert to 4k) receivers like Marantz and Yamaha have in slimline, I'm curious what options that gives us on the HTPC's video card?

Given audio can pass thru HDMI as well as mini-displayport I'm intrigued but don't see the mini-dp being viable all the way thru (lack of mini-dp support on receivers primarily thwart this).

However, I'm also not clear on if one can do a mini-DP run from HTPC to TV for picture, and do a separate audio to receiver run (HDMI I suspect) for Dolby Digital Plus, DTH-HD, etc. (e.g., the 7.1 formats). I know optical can do DD and DTS but is limited to 5.1 so that's out. And not sure how many video cards have simultaneous HDMI and mini-DP output or can be configured to do sound only out the HDMI.

Anyway, curious to hear some thoughts/posts since I'm hesitant to get a top-end Nvidia card since it's a huge cost and a huge footprint.
