I -NEED- a tool for OS X that works like Norton Ghost for specific features that i regularly use.

I've looked around a bit, but i don't have a non-PPC mac to test some software with (like CCC)

Right now on some older machines, i have a WinPE with Norton Ghost 11;
i use it for these specific features that it provides:

1. makes a disc image of windows based on the data, not the whole partition (e.g. image file is only as much data as you're using, not the whole 500GB drive being imaged)
2. i can then use 'GhostExplorer' to browse the image file, and extract certain files/folders from it (THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART)
3. it can also make a disk-to-disk full copy (but this is what almost all the tools do, so no big deal)

I would like to inquire to you guys if there is any software for Mac that can do the same things as above, with number 2 being the most important, and number 1 being VERY helpful

I've wondered if i could use TimeMachine on a running mac to make an image file of an external drive, that i can later browse via TimeMachine, but like i said, i don't have a mac to test this idea with.

Help is very much appreciated!

Quick note: Ghost will do disk-to-disc of OSX, and it will make an image too, but it's the FULL size of the hard drive since Ghost does not understand the filesystem, and i cannot browse the image to extract files because GhostExplorer is windows only.

I'll look next time I have my Mac open to see what I'm using and see what features it has and will post back. I'll see if I can browse a TimeMachine backup.

I confirm that you can browse a timeMachine backup. You can pick and choose the files you want for every backup period.

Time Machine backs up your exact files on a secondary drive. But be careful TimeMachine stops works in your backup drive is full. You will need to do some manual cleaning once in a while.

For mac, options are always limited and that's pretty much the only option you have.

Not sure whether or not this will meet your needs but you can look at SuperDuper! from shirt-pocket.com. I have it installed on my Mac and originally purchased it to clone a drive. There are other options that I have not explored yet.

thank you guys for your time in looking into this, and i had a look at SuperDuper! and it doesn't seem to have any sort of image-based backup ability (that i can see in screen shots or 'feature' pages).

But i did have a look into Carbon Copy Cloner, and it -appears- to do everything i need, but I'm still looking into it, and again, i can't test it yet as i do not have an Intel Mac (I'll get my boss to buy me one =P).

Question about Time machine though; i know it could browse files for the backup of the machine it's on, but can you plug in an external drive (from another mac) and then backup that drive ONLY with TimeMachine and then browse THAT backup's files? (having nothing to do with the mac it's running on except using TimeMachine)

again, thanks guys!

I'm not sure I understand your question correctly. But with time machine, you need to assign an external HD to do the back up. You can then take that external HD and plug it on another mac to browse the files, but you will not be able to do an automatic backup with time machine on the second mac. (the HD would have to be reformatted for a second computer)

In conclusion, you will not be able to share a HD for the back up.

what i meant with TimeMachine was having TimeMachine just backup another mac's hard drive plugged in via USB or SATA onto a network location, using the mac that TimeMachine is running on only as a 'workstation' for backing up other mac hard drives to the network.

But from what i can tell, i believe CCC is able to do what i need, now i just need a mac to test with.
