Thank you in advance everyone for taking to the time to help me out..

i am a first time builder and i just overclocked my cpu to 4.3 ghz on 1.2v... i have not tried to push it any harder due to temp problems i have been encountering.

specs:
Asus z97 Maximus Vii hero
i5 4690k
Noctua NH-D15

Idle temps at 0% are about 30 degrees

when i run prime 95 on small ffts it immediately jumps to 80c and begins to gradually climb

cores 0 and 3 are on average 4c-5c lower than 1 and 2 under load

i have reapplied thermal paste twice, only thing is im using 50% isopropyl alcohol vs 99% but i have been drying it completely before reapplying

Max temps after about 4 minutes is around 85c so i just shut it down

At this point due to my limited knowledge im not sure what to do.. any help would be much appreciated.

To much or not enough thermal paste and/or heatsink not seating completely on CPU?

Yep, either that or a horrible airflow in your computer. Try having one side of the case open.

What would be an ideal amount of thermal paste, ive been running thin line 3/4 down the middle of the cpu

What is your ambient temperature?
I think your results are nominal.
I like to test with occt. It stresses in a different way. It will shut down at 85c.

No problem with cleaning with 50% alcohol.
The usual mistake is to use too much paste. It will act as an insulator.
A small drop is enough. It will spread under heat and pressure.
It is hard to use too littke.

Don't worry too much, under normal heavy loads, you will not reach sustained stress test levels.
4.3 at 1.20v is typical. You might even do 4.4 at 1.25 if you want.
If the cpu gets too hot, it will slow down or even shut off to protect itself.
That temperature might be 105c.

His temps are not normal they are about 10c-15c too high with that cooler... I cap out at just over 70c with a 4.4 ghz OC on my i7 4770k using the same cooler and the refresh CPUs (i7 4790k/i5 4690k) have better thermals - I would expect ~70c max temp in prime @1.2v.

This is fine and is the Intel Recommended method. The line should run parallel to the CPU core orientation.

Can you reference the picture i posted? That was a 3/4s amount

That looks fine, a little heavy, but coverage is complete. You can probably get away with slightly less.

Wrong, he is running a Devils Cannon core, they run hotter than your 4770k. If you want to compare your core with his, then get a 4790k. 85C is slightly high for that cooler, if he was running a stock cooler than I'd expect those temps. I would reapply the paste again, resit the cooler and see if it lowers the temperatures.

Ok sweet, any ideas regarding my temps if its not he paste?

That was too much thermàl paste. Apply just a really tiny bit, seat the heatspreader and look if everything is covered. Post a picture again then to check if the amount was good.

Do not seat the heatspreader then take it off to look at it... doing so will cause air bubbles to form... best thing to do is just apply it and check the temps, don't look after seating the cooler. Maybe give us a pic before you put the heatsink on so we can see how much you are using.

Huh? they do not run hotter... they run cooler...

Ok sounds good if you get a chance check back in a few hours I will reapply it then I have to leave atm, thank you again everyone I appriciate it. But based on the pictures there is way too much paste?

Yea devils canyon is cooler than the 4770k in fact the devils canyon was produced in response to the thermal issues on the 4770k. So the 4770k does NOT run cooler lol where did you get your info?

I have to agree with Geofelt here, especially if the Prime95 is the latest version. Don't use Prime95 newer than v.26.6 on Haswell!

85*C. is quite safe for stress testing. During gaming and normal day to day usage, 75*C. should be the maximum.

@Derza10: When you "cap out at just over 70*C." what program are you using? Prime95? What version?

Good news everyone!

Reseated the heatsink with pea sized thermal paste in the middle of the cpu and downloaded v26.6 prime 95. I have been running small fft on full load for well over an hour and have an average temp of 63c which i am more than happy with. Has not gone over 68c.

I think im gonna leave the oc alone at 4.3ghz at 1.20v for now. That should be plenty for dayz and arma 3 with the help of my 780ti. Again thank you all for the help, ill report back if something else pops up you guys have been great helping someone like me who has no idea what the hell they're doing!
