Choosing a PSU

Hey guys,

I am attempting to choose a PSU. I know I need 1000W but I am stumped as to the differences between efficiency of the PSU as it relates to Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum types.

For example, I was wanting a Corsair RM 1000i but some people said they were made cheaply. So I was thinking of the Corsair HX1000i instead.

But it's $100, and the only thing I see is that it's 80+ Platinum instead of Gold. People say it's more efficient but the specs say the efficiency difference is 90% for the Gold and a pathetic 92% for the Platinum. I think I'm missing something because 2% cannot be worth over $100.

Thanks!

Efficiency isn't really all that important. It's not the fact that it's efficient that attracts me to a high efficiency PSU, it is the quality of parts used in a highly efficient PSU. Companies tend to use good parts on them.

I wrote an article on how to choose a power supply in case you want to read some details. I've linked it below.

If I were buying a 1000W psu, I'd probably get the EVGA supernova G2 or P2 1000W.

How do you know you need a 1000w PSU?

A tool I recommend you use to find out is this: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

It is FREE for PERSONAL use, and will give you a very accurate picture of your power needs. I recommend you check your system against this tool to avoid spending more than you should on a good PSU.

If you take the EVGA G2 into consideration I would also suggest taking a look into the Corsair RM1000.

Having a desire to get a good deal means price for performance. $100 may get you a 1000w PS but will that be a good one. I prefer when if comes to power supplies to get my moneys worth along with peace of mind.
