Power Supply dead (possibly?)

Hello,

I was in the process of rebuilding a pc with a new motherboard and processor while using everything else from my old computer. I decided to jump start my psu first as I had been some issues with the psu's fan in the past but adding some oil to the fan always fixed the issue.

I used paperclip to jumper it but nothing happened, the fan din't spin. I checked the 24pin connector and the jumper clip multiple times to see if i had done something wrong, but it turns out that i was doing it right.

Then i decided to switch the fan with a different one and gave it shot.. when i turned it on, the fan moved for a millisecond and a strange noise started coming from the psu itself (NOT from the fan).

I switched back from to the old fan and got the same result.

After flicking the power switch OFF and ON a couple of times the noise stopped but the fan still did not move.

I would post audio/video but the noise has stopped now...
Is the psu dead? can it still be fixed?

Extra info:
Cooler Master extreme power plus 600w, 3-4 years old..
psu has a 2 pin fan header.
The second fan i tried has a 3 pin connector but im guessing i aligned it right when i connected it to the psu.

More about : power supply dead possibly

I din't know that this model had a bad reputation back when i bought it. It did work alright for the past few years...

Well, can you suggest me a good psu?
I dont have a lot of choices available in my country.. here are my options:

http://www.flipkart.com/computers/computer-components/p...

I've already gone above the budget i had set for my upgrades i.e. $400 (Rs 24000) and bought a processor, motherboard and ssd.

Hows Corsair RM series?

I guess i could spend about $150 (Rs 9000) max for a modular 80+ gold psu 600w-750w
$1 = Rs 60

Evga is not available in my area..

I've read great things about seasonic.. im looking at their m12ll bronze evo edition.. jonnyguru.com says its good too. They cost as much as corsair rm series (80+ gold) .. How efficient would a psu with gold certification be over a bronze one (if the both cost the same)..

To be honest im a lil sick of corsairs n coolermaster mainstream stuff.. their products are decent but the quality isnt great..(not sure about corsair's psu, ive never owned them)

Also, how many watts would be sufficient for my build, 650w/750w/850w?

CPU- i5 4670k
Motherboard- Asus z97 AR
GPU- GTX 560ti (will be upgrading to a high end card once their new line of gpu's release..)

Might also go with water cooling sometime next year.

you may just be paying for higher quality parts ..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/80_Plus

as for what size you need depends on what you want for upgrade head room

if you can get the 850w get it it may be a little overkill now but then latter on you want that big card and then be glad you got it over a 600w

Thanks for guiding me in the right direction.

From what i can understand there's not massive difference between gold and bronze certification..
Jonnyguru says the rm850 is a solid psu but uses ltec capacitors (im guessing they're not the best)

Im still unable decide which one to go for.. I need to place an order in an hour so i can get same day delivery..

I also need it urgently so i can test out my new components and check if they work fine.

Update: I fixed it. The fan was the issue.

Not sure why i din't try it in the first place but the old method of oiling the fan worked! The noise from the psu also stopped. Kinda glad that my wallet wont be empty now, although i will buy a new psu soon.

It may be a horrible psu but it has worked fine all the years.. plus i had sleeved all the cables on it so its not all the easy to let go.

This does not change the fact that its a crappy psu. I am taking into consideration the suggestions you made, and i really appreciate you trying to help me out :)

Thanks again man!
