Hello,
Specs
gfx:770/7850
mobo: z77 pro 3
cpu:i5-3570k
psu: ocz modxstream pro 700w

I recently upgraded to a evga geforce 770 gtx from a amd 7850. I got the new card set, plugged in and ready to go. But it just gives me a black screen, I am sure my pc is booting because I can hear the windows launch sound after a few seconds. So i unplugged it to see if the 7850 would still work, and it works just fine. Any one got any idea as to why the 770 is just displaying black? I do not think the card is dead, I just got it today. Also the fan does spin when its plugged in.

Thanks for the help

What version is your bios? There were updates to improve discreet gpu compatibility in the bios updates up until version 1.80

Personally, I'd update that bios to the latest version 2.1
I can't gaurantee that it will fix the problem, but that bios is quite out of date, and it does state that they have improved discreet GPU and vBios compatibility.

Warning: updating bios can be dangerous. If something goes wrong, you could corrupt the bios. Do not power off while it is updating, do not run any programs.

Save the BIOS files on a device such as USB stick, or hard disk
Press [F2] during POST to get into BIOS setup menu.
Select the Instant flash under [Advanced] menu to execute it.

ASRock Instant Flash will automatically detect all devices and only list those BIOS versions which are suitable for your motherboard.

Select the suitable BIOS version and flash.

Damn. It was worth a shot.

Next I'd try:
-Clean driver install. When you installed the drivers did you wipe old drivers?
-Test that GPU in another system (I know most people don't happen to have another system around).
-If it works in another system, next I'd start eyeballing the PSU. That is a good quality unit you have so it should be fine though.

I cant even get to windows to install geforce drviers :\

But prior to swapping I did do a driver sweep on my amd ones to make sure there would be no conflict.

So you are sure there are no left over drivers for your old card, correct? I'm only saying this because you said if you plug your old card the PC works.

How about plugging the monitor into your HD 4000 on board GPU and booting this way, and when you are in Windows trying to see if the GTX 770 is detected at all, and if so trying to install the drivers this way?

When i swapped back to my old 7850 I did the onboard video card update method, as for doing the 770 that way, it does not even show up in the device manager.

Also as for what jimthenagual suggested, I do not have another PSU handy that has the available 6/8 pins so that is not an option.

Stupid question. You have the PCI-e connectors from the PSU to the GPU connected?

It is starting to sound like a hardware problem unfortunately.

6 pin from Psu into the 6 pin of the 770
6+2 from the Psu into the 8 pin on the 770

That should work right?

To be honest I highly doubt it is the PSU as it's got plenty of power for this system. But the card could be faulty, it happens sometimes. The easiest way to check would be if you could try it in someone else's PC. If not you would probably have to deal with RMA and all that annoying and time consuming stuff. Hope you find an easy fix.

Yeah, that sounds right. Well, I'm stumped. I'd still like to think it is a driver issue, but you have completely wiped the old drivers out. I think you'll have to take that GPU into a shop and have them test it.

Yes,

that's how I've got my 770 connected.

I might just be stupid but I might of figured it out. I dont know much about psus so.

Do the ends of the 6+2 and 6 pin matter?

My 6+2 looks to be correct minus on the end where you plug it into the PSU
its got the
[x][x][x][x]
[x][x][x][ ] pattern

while the end that would go into the gpu is a pure
[x][x][x][x]
[x][x][x][x]

my 6 to 6 seems fine

Was unable to find a second computer to try it with so

I believe that is just a ground pin that is missing. It should still work.

Hm alright, They gave me a 6 and a 6+2 pin adapter with the card but the 6+2 requires 2 6 pins and the 6 requires to molex. I do not have the required cables to use these adapters. You got any idea if OCZ makes replacement cable bundles?

I can currently jerry rig it around my power cords, but I don't think its ment to work like that.

I have 2 6 pins coming from the psu into the 8 pin they provided, then I have
1 6 pin with 2 molex and a 4 pin on the end I used the 2 molex from these to go into the 6 pin they provided.

I would think that should work, but I don't quite know

It's getting to the point where I think the card just might be done, I just wanna double check everything before I RMA it.

I didn't quite understand all that. But you shouldn't need to use any adapters at all. Your PSU comes with a 6pin and a 6+2pin and you can use those to power your GPU. Am I understanding you right? Are you trying to use those adapters when you don't need to at all?

I already tired the basic 6+2 and 6 pin from my, i did not know if I needed to use a specific type of pin though, the hand book is very misleading. But if any 6+2/6 pin PCI-E cable will work, I guess I do not need to use the cables they gave me.

Im just gonna rma it and see If i can find out from them what the issue was.

Thanks for the help

Well at least you have it pretty much narrowed down to two things. Either that GPU or the PSU isn't working I'd say. Good luck with the RMA, I hope all goes smoothly.
