Hi there!
I actually have a GTX 650; this concretely: http://www.asus.com/Graphics_Cards/GTX650E2GD5/specific...

I plan to buy a 970 when they announce it and i am wondering if i should keep the 650 for dedicated physx and the 970 as primary card or just set the 970 for everything and get rid off the 650.

CPU: 4770k@4.3ghz
Mobo: Asus Z87-A
PSU: Corsair tx650

PD: All pci lanes are empty atm except for the GTX 650 and the sound card (asus xonar DG PCI)

More about : gtx 650 dedicated physx

What would you be using that can actually take advantage of the physx? Yours is another of those "it depends" questions, whether physx is of any use to you and whether the sofware can use one card for physx and another for graphics.

I'll be playing some games with physx, like Planetside2 and Metro Redux.

Might as well.
IMO the only way to justify a dedicated PhysX card is "I already had the card in the closet", go nuts.

I already have the 650 but i don't know if it will be worth the extra wattage when using a 970 as main card.

I personally wouldn't bother. A GTX 970 should perform so well with PhysX that you'd probably only gain 2-3 fps from using the GTX 650. So many Cuda cores... A GTX 650 would be merely a drop against the tide.

GTX 770s already only gain 4-5 fps from a GTX 650 Ti PhysX card (forgot where I saw that benchmark, sorry).
You'd probably be better off just selling the GTX 650 once you get the GTX 970.

It's usually better to have some actual data to review when making your decision. A GTX 650 when paired with a GTX 690 does indeed increase performance significanly. I would expect similar results with the GTX 970, which should be comparable to a 690 in performance. Yes, a 970 doesn't need a dedicated PhysX card, but it will improve your performance by more than a few FPS. In a more demanding game like the Batman Arkham series, it might make all the difference in certain setups.

That's Borderlands 2. I'm not sure about Planetside 2, but the Metro games need as much help as they can get.
