OK this is a dumb question and im pretty sure the answer is no, but im going to ask anyway.
I have an old rig with a GTX 285 1GB DDR3, and i found laying around with my spare parts a geforce 9800 Gx2 1GB DDR3, and i was wondering if they could be sli together? everything ive read is that its supposed to be the exact same model graphics card. i read one place that stated if they are close to the same it might work but i havent heard a definite yes they will. also im not sure how close these 2 actually are. Thanks for putting up with my stupidity and for your help

they have to be exactly the same series and model

ex. GTX 660 cannot be paired with any of the following: GTX 560, GTX 760, GTX 670, GTX 650

However, they can be from different manufacturers and have different amounts of VRAM. The SLIed GPUs will just use the lowest clock and lowest amount of VRAM commonly available.

So no, you cannot SLI a GTX 285 with a GeForce 9800. It will not work.

best use for either of those cards would be as a dedicated PhysX card.

never messed with that before, but i did just look it up, doesnt seem to hard to set up.
Would using the 285 in a newer build as a dedicated PhysX card be good or a waste? is it to old, or does that not mater. And when i say new i mean 2 gtx 770's
