Make sure that the video cable is connected to the graphics card's ports, not the motherboard's.

Make sure your monitor's input setting is set to the right connection.

If the motherboard has on board video output ports, connect your monitor cable to them.
If you try to connect the monitor lead to a Pci-e based graphics caed in your system it will not display a picture.
This is because in the bios the factory settings for video output are set to use the video port outputs of the mobo.

Once you have a picture or image on your monitor, enter the bios and in the sub menu that relates to graphics.
Set the first primary display device in the list to be Pci-e.
Save the settings before you exit the bios.
Move your monitor cable back to the video output ports back to the Pci-e based card.
And the picture to the monitor will always be displayed from the pci-e based card.

^ Ah, that's a fair point. Not always true, though - it depends on the motherboard. All of the fancier ones detect discrete graphics automatically and switch to them.
