HI I am buying items for my first build. I will not be putting the components together that will be done by someone I know but I have to buy all the components and pick them out. I plan on purchasing a R9 280x or a 290 and using a Kraken G10 with a Corsair H55 or h60 for cooling on an ASROCK FX990 EXTREME 9 mobo- http://www.kitguru.net/components/motherboard/luke-hill/asrock-990fx-extreme9-motherboard-review/3/

So I have been reading a bit on the temps of the VRM heatsink which seem to be be either higher or around the same as with the stock heatsink of these GPU's. I'm wondering how to get these temps down. Should I change the fan on the G10 or do I need some items like these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835708011

Im sorry if this is a noob question but I dont know much about building PC's and I just want to keep my temps low and get the most life out of my GPU. WIll I need to buy any of these items for my set up or is my mobo's heatsinks already equipped well enough to deal with some overclocking on these cards? Please help as I dont want to go buying all of this stuff when I may not need half of it, thanks.

I have crossfire R9 290x both with AIO water cooling and Kraken G10 bracket in a Mid Tower case.

I would fit 140mm radiator - the H90. It is 10 degrees cooler than the Zalman LQ320 wit ha fat 120mm radiator fitted to my second R9 290x wit hthe Kraken G10. The 120mm rad gets pretty hot in use, the 140mm one stays cool to the touch. Big difference and I can run the fan slower too - so less noise ....

The card wit the Gelid Icy vrm kit reports slightly higher VRM temps than the card with no heatsinks on the VRMs. I dont think you need the memory heatsinks at all.

The fans included with the bracket are not noisy but you could replace them with noctua fans - and indeed in hindsight, that is where I would spend my cash over vrm...

i think the whole VRM overheat issue is easy to take out of context. You can monitor the temps you get easily and buy VRM/memory cooling if you need them to TRY get temps down. All cards are different ..the bracket is easy to fit and refit so .. a wait and see policy is best..

I understand the concern of keeping temps down to get more life .. in reality your GPU is designed to run at 95 degrees and any water cooling solution will run well below that allowing your card to hit max clock rates ..cooler. Your card will be well past being the apple of your eye and its value very low in a few years time. If you wanted the card to run for 10 years instead of 7 you might have a point .. but longevity isnt the issue at all with current cards.

I would buy second hand cards too..from good old ebay. You will get 30 days "warranty" which is plenty of time to fit the Kraken and try the card out (just dont tell the seller or ebay you are fitting a different cooler) If it is a dud card it will show with the stock cooler as soon as you get it in your system and most mining cards will be 60-50% off new price and well tested. It is the cooler that is mechanical and most likely to fail on mining cards and .. you are replacing that with a G10 so ....new doesnt make much sense at all.
