My Passport 500gb ext drive fails to show in my Computer on my Vista laptop. Laptop will not boot to windows unless or until I disconnect the drive. Once running I connect it but can't see it until I unplug it, then it shows up momentarily as the external "E" drive, then goes away. My win 7 desktop will boot while the drive is connected but shows in Computre as a local drive and crashes Win explorer when attempting to access the contents. Drive lites oAre blinking and the platters are spinning normally. Does anyone have a clue how to resolve this issue?

Make sure the driver is up to date. There's some software that comes with the My Passport series, install that and let it set up. Have you had the first time installation window which installs removable media when you connected it?

Hi there Gary Potts,

Is it the first time you are using the drive or you have been using it for some time? I think that the issue you are facing is most probably related to your BIOS settings. I would suggest you to check out the following topic from the WD's Knowledge Base: http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1201

Hope this will help,
