the computer has a Gigabyte model GA-8S648FX motherboard with integrated AC97 audio, integrated LAN, 8X AGP slot, 3 PCI slots, and IDE connections for 2 HDD's, 2 ROMS, and FDD(1.44 MB).
Power Unit is 400 Watt Kentek 20/24 Pin ATX ,12 ATX, and 4 pin Molex and SATA connectors.
the agp card is ATI 9550 Radeon, 256 MB 8X (1.5V),3D graphics Card.
the OS is WinXP Home Ed.
the drivers were all installed from the website for the motherboard.
I installed Western Digital 80 GB, 7,400 rpm IDE Hard Drive
I installed a HP CD-RW/DVD-ROM, Model 3OHC-4832K-CT2 on the secondary IDE header.the drive shows up in the BIOS as a combo CD/DVD 4832K drive,
Windows lists it as "a lite-On combo CD/DVD 4832K" drive in the CD/DVD ROM Drives in Device Manager.problem is it isn't a lite-on drive.
the ROM Reads Cds and DVDs, but when I put in an audio CD, it plays but no sound comes out of speakers.
I tried removing the F_Audio connector and replacing the jumpers on the F_audio, I tried just removing the jumpers, and the F-audio connector.the only result s I get are:
1.when I plug the speakers in the front, I get a loud noise, and 2.if I plug them in the back, no sound at all.
the ROM was just purchased slightly used.
is it the motherboard or the ROM or something else causing this problem?
what can I do to resolve it.
Hp only has driver for the Lite-On Combo drive.

try downloading the newest drivers here.
in the bios make sure the audio chipset is turned on.
start with an mp3 to check that the sound chipet is working. if the rear audio ports are working make sure the front audio header on the right pins. on older cd rom if you dont play through the pc in digital sound you have to use a cd rom audio cable to the mb.

the Realtek website said to download the drivers from mfg. of motherboard. I had Windows update the realtek AC 97 driver, and when this was done I saw a warning next to the Realtek AC 97 in Device Manager.so I had to rollback the driver, to remove the warning.
The ROM was mfg'd in June 2005. I will check the BIOS in re. to the sound.

dumb question: do I have a big enough power unit to support all that is running on the motherboard/ If not please recommend optimal Wattage power Unit. I was wondering if not enough power could be a culprit.

I have concluded that the sound chipset may have been bad. I just installed Creative labs sound blaster Live, Model CT 4830. i didn't have the install Cd for it, so I let windows XP install their drivers.
I connected the In-CD cable to it and to the Lite-On Combo Cd-RW/DVd drive, connected and turned on te speakers, and played an audio CD.eureka, I have sound!!!!
thanks so much to the members who replied to my plight and offered helpful suggestionssimonchipmunk
