Hi, I recently bought a new, nvidia 680m graphics card for my Alienware m17x r4 laptop to upgrade from a standard 660m 1gb to the 680m 2 gb. After I put the card in, the computer simply stopped charging. Because of the Alienware optimus, this meant it would not be able to use the new graphics card. When I put the old card back in, it is able to charge again. Do you guys know what the causes might be and if I need a new, new card. BTW, the heat-sink isstill the stock one meant for the 660. Could that be the cause?

heat sink would not be the cause. it sounds like compatibility issue or the 680m is causing a short in the system.

Requires more power to run the card.
On a gaming laptop two things happen.

On some you have hybrid graphics solutions, so for example an Intel based graphics solution for desktop, web browsing, flash played, video playback.

With hybrid when you play a game say with an Alienware. And a high to mid end card such as a 660, 680 mini Pc-e based card.
The power circuit can use the mains and the power from the battery to obtain the right current needed to work with the card at the same time. or switch depending on the mains cord in or out.

So if the battery no longer charges, it means the new card is drawing more power.
So the power adapter cannot provide enough voltage to power the card and charge the battery at the same time.

If the draw becomes too much.
Result no charging of battery via the DC mains adapter.
One or the other is cut off as the DC adapter cannot provide enough watts or amps for the charging circuit to open or activate.

Is there any adapter larget than a 19.34 amp adapter? I thought that was the most that these could take.
