I am planning on upgrading with a $700 Budget. I have the Asus Z87-C motherboard and i5 4570/w GTX 760. Would upgrading the GPU first then motherboard down the road be a good option or should I update the CPU and motherboard first? Also, would the i5 be able to handle SLI 980's because I plan to use those for the life the PC.

-If you are wondering why I said 900 series, Nvidia recently planned on skipping right to the 900s.

On the GPUs I've only heard of the 800 series to come out and the 900 series was just talk. However, that's not why I'm here. Upgrade the mobo and the CPU. You won't utilize the GPUs to their full potential otherwise and its a pain to take out a mobo and CPU after you've installed new GPUs. Future proof the mobo and CPU first and who knows they might have better GPUs out by the time you get back to that part to upgrade.

Any mobo + CPU swap is a pain, but moving GPUs is pretty painless in comparison. I honestly don't see an immediate need for a CPU/mobo upgrade as is, since the 900 aren't likely to be more than a 15% performance increase over the equivalent 700s anyways.

Well the 760 is fairly recent so would it be better to upgrade the CPU and Motherboard? I could wait a few months and upgrade the GPU during Christmas then.

That's what I personally would do. But, I like to future proof my platform first. And even if the new GPUs are only 15% better in performance right now. Who knows what will be out by Christmas. Just remember that its only going to be reference models that are being release soon. The big bad cards will be out later.

Yes I agree. Now I might only have 300$ for a GPU budget so would running SLI 870's be decent setup? I don't want to go overkill on the mobo/CPU and then have an "decent" GPU.

Maybe not on SLI. You might be able to get one when they get released and the get a 2nd later on. But, I would get one that will do the job for now and then wait and save up for the better a little later on.

I'd go for the GPU upgrade over a cpu/mobo upgrade. That is an extremely powerful CPU still, and the motherboard to match. That cpu will not bottleneck any GPU out now or in the near future. (Of course I can't predict what the 900s will be like, so it's conjecture on my part)

Assuming you are gaming at 1080x1920p, moving from a 760 to a theoretical 980 would be a massive increase on today's more demanding games like BF4 for example. Whereas an upgrade to the CPU/Mobo and keeping the 760 will not give a performance increase at all.
