I am looking into building a computer with a Pentium G3258 anniversary addition with the intention of playing around with overclocking. I was looking at an MSI H81M-P33 or MSI Z87-G45 and was wondering if these are good options or if someone more in the know than I could make recommendations. Thanks!

For proper overclocking in general you'll want a Z-series chipset, not a H-series one. For the G3258 in particular you'll want a Z97 board if you intend to overclock.

Z97 (and the rest of the 9-series) supports Haswell-R (like the G3258) out of the box while the 8-series (Z87, H81, etc.) require a BIOS update to support Haswell-R.

Something like this would do nicely:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Anniversary ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($84.99 @ Micro Center)
Total: $84.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
