Hey guys, So i'm a IT networking major, and I havnt had much hands on. I was planning on messing around with what i had at home, and possibly create a home cloud storage. I'm completely new at this, and was wondering if my normal Internet Router would work? I already have one set up for my internet and have a spare, its a n350 belkin and has some usb ports. Would that work for creating a cloud storage, or would I need a specific type of router?

I can't tell what model you really mean but if the router has the feature to allow it provide a network shared drive you can use it. If it does not have that feature then you can not. Most belkin routers will not run third party firmware.

This is not too much of a network project you assign the device a IP address that does not conflict with your lan, turn off the DHCP and use it. It is not routing in any way. Consumer "routers" can't really route anyway. Most are gateways they allow a single lan subnet to be translated to a single wan ip address. Obviously you are not real far along in your degree or you would find that frustration out very quickly.

You either go to commercial equipment or you fight your way though dd-wrt or other third party firmware if you want a actual router.
