You can't change from 64-bit to 32-bit OS without doing a full reinstall of the system. It would be easier to just upgrade the RAM, it's a fairly cheap and easy process. What PC do you have?

Agreed.

Also, it appears that Windows 8 might require LESS MEMORY than Windows 7, not more:
http://googlechromesupportnow.com/comparing-memory-usage-in-windows-8-vs-windows-7/

"...Therefore, it is clear that when comparing Windows 7 vs Windows 8 memory and system resource consumption, all such added features help the modern platform run low on assets but faster than previous editions. "

*If you are just doing BASIC things like e-mail, web browsing and don't feel that the system is getting SLUGGISH much then you don't necessarily need more memory though I would suggest getting more depending. I would recommend not opening too many web pages at once either or it might slow down a lot.

So we'd need to know what SYSTEM you have to determine the type/cost of memory as well as what you actually DO with your system to see how much memory you should get.

My dad has 2GB with Windows 8 and it's running great for web browsing and basic photo editing.

I have a simple Eeebox 1036 at home with a J1900 CPU and 2GB of RAM. Having used Windows 8 with it though, I can promise you it's not a smooth experience. After loading an antivirus and the basic essentials to get online for web browsing (Java, Flash, Silverlight, and Chrome/Firefox), just booting to windows resulted in 50-70% memory usage, which got as high as 70-90% when just opening ONE web browser tab. If you were to try 1GB, you'd basically be running off the HDD's virtual memory. I upgraded to 4 within a week, and saw a huge performance increase. I've also used the T100 transformer tablets with 2GB RAM, while they are faster due to the SSD storage, they are still constantly using the virtual memory to keep things running (which is sad because that's a lot of write cycles for such a small storage device, can't be sure it'll last very long with use like that).
