I have had this XFX Radeon 6970 for a while now, but I've never really looked at it's temperatures. I did however notice the fans running high when playing heavily modded skyrim, so I looked at the temps and it was hitting over 100c. Of course I was worried so I took the beast apart and cleaned the old stuff off thoroughly and put on new Arctic Silver 5. Whereas before it was idling at around 76 it now idles at 68, which from what I read is still way too high, any ideas?

Hello,

Your graphics card has the reference cooler (a single fan towards the back of the card) or a custom one? How about the airflow inside your case? Please post a picture with the inner layout of your setup.

It's the fan that the card comes with, it's not directly over the gpu but off to the back (more inside the case as opposed to where you hook up the DVI etc)
Here's some pictures of the inside and outside of my case (they aren't super great but you can see). There's a hard to see fan on the top left as well as one on the top and the front of the case, and the power supply (bottom left) has a fan that blows out the bottom.

That huge fan on the side blows right onto the GPU, and the wires aren't overly clustered, I think that the airflow isn't really a problem.

I figured it out for anyone having the same problem. Running two monitors one 1440 and one 1080 raised my idling temperature 27 degrees Celsius. Disconnecting the second monitor lowered my idling temp to 41 degrees Celsius.

I'm not sure how to mark this as solved.
