Desktop Specification
-- Intel Dual Core @1.80Ghz
-- Gigabyte 945 GCM
-- 1GB RAM DDR2
-- Harddisk = IDE, 40GB (8 yrs old)
-- PSU (max power:310W) (2 yrs old)
-- OS: XP SP3

15 days ago, i started getting a problem with a desktop in which my system suddenly freezes (while using) with black screen (i think only harddisk gets off) and after 2-3 secs system restarts with a message " SYSTEM DISK FAILURE, INSERT BOOT DISK".It was not detecting the harddisk. When I switch off the system and start again it works fine then again after some time same problem repeats. I cannot tell the frequency of this problem occurence as sometimes it occurs within 15 mins while some other day it works smootly for 2-3 days and then restarts.

Following things i tried with no luck
1) Run the CHK disk tool
2) Formatted the hard drive with no errors
3) Set the BIOS settings to default

Recently bought accesories
1) From 2 months using the 1TB my passport external HDD connected to the front USB port
2) From 1 month using the 2.1 phillips Speaker connected to onboard Sound port. And sometimes on USB sound card

What will be the problem in my CPU and what should i do. KIndly Explain me.

IF anything else info you want Kindly let me know.

Thanks!!!!!!!!

An 8-years old hard drive is very probably nearing the end of it's life and if you've had no problems with it until now it's done very well. Test it with the drive maker's diagnostic software for DOS to be sure about it's state of health as CHKDSK only checks for file system errors, not the operational integrity of the drive itself.

The download links for the DOS software are here for all makes except WD: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
For WD drives the download link is here: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/63494-looking-for-western-digital-data-lifeguard-iso/

You will have to make a bootable CD from the diagnostic software's CD Image (ISO file). You can do that with IMGBurn...

When you've made the CD, boot your computer from it to start the testing application.

Thank you very much

I will try this and post the results ASAP.

I posted the query as i was not sure about HDD problem as some times my IDE HDD works for 2-3 days without any problem. IF there is a problem i will certainly buy a new one.

I only wanted to rule out any power issue so that it should not trouble my New harddisk also
