Hi,

I'm currently putting together a home server for the following usage:

  • Use DLNA (for both audio and video) for various devices (smartTV, smartphones, ...)
  • Use as GIT server for personal use.
  • Use for Atlassian platform
  • To download torrents on request.
  • To automatically download the newest episodes of pre set series
  • Be flexible so if I come up with other uses it will be able to handle them ^_^

  • Now I've already made a list for the potential build but I'm not 100% confident about it.
    CPU: AMD A8-6600K 3.9GHz Quad-Core Processor (£65.94 @ Aria PC)
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A88M-HD+ Micro ATX FM2+ Motherboard (£47.03 @ Amazon UK)
    Memory: Crucial Ballistix Sport 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1600 Memory
Storage: Seagate 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Hybrid Internal Hard Drive (£53.94 @ Aria PC)
Case: BitFenix Phenom M Arctic White MicroATX Mini Tower Case (£71.95 @ Amazon UK)
Power Supply: be quiet! 300W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply

Now I've done some research on CPU's and think I could probably get a better bang for my bucks for my purpose. Comparing these for example already gave me a feeling that the A8-6600K might not be perfect. It's probably a great pick for normal desktops but you you also pay for the APU, which my headless server won't really use. I found the FX-6300 interesting due to it's 3 core (6 virtual) nature.

I know I'll probably have to change the MB if I go with something else, that's fine, I'm open to both intel and AMD CPU's.

    Input is much appreciated!

FX-6300 would certainly be better suited to your needs although consider it has no IGP so you need a graphics card. Even a cheap and nasty GPU is going to set you back £15-20 which brings the total cost near £90... and at that price you would be better off buying an Intel i3.

I just realised I have an EXTREMELY old GPU that was NEVER used :p
Sapphire Radeon X600 PRO with a FULL 128 MB of, yes!, DDR memory

That might actually serve it's purpose of going with a IGP-less CPU? Having my doubts about it :p  and the eye bleeding resolution I'll have to use.. But hey :p
