My GPU dead or other fault?

Bought an R9 290x, after finally acquiring an active display adaptor for my vga screen I powered it on for the 1st time using this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00MCGMHW4/ref=oh_au...

To my dismay I got no display but spinning fans. The screen and system works with onboard video but my gpu refuses to display anything.

Is the adaptor I'm using a cheap piece of tat or is my expensive new GPU doa?

I was planning on getting a new screen eventually and I was thinking of just getting it instantly, but I don't want to find out my gpu wont work on that either.

Help appreciated.

Hello... The best plan is to try your video card in another Friends computer or using a Friends DVI monitor with yours.... too determine if your GPU arrived dead.

Did you disable the onboard video in your BIOS (some BIOS have you set the priority to the PCI slot)?

To do that, you need to be connected to the onboard video - change BIOS & save, power down, switch video connections and power up.

Tried it and didn't work, though the R9 290x is digital only so I wasn't expecting anything.

I checked my ASRock UEFI and I already had PCI set to preferred. :(

Found this on the description....have you tried this?

"No external power adapter required. For low-powered DVI ports, can use a micro USB cable power the device from any USB power source."

Now that's interesting, the adaptor does have a micro usb shaped slot on the side labelled "DC5V" , perhaps I should purchase one and connect it?

Do you have an Android phone or similar? Most use the micro USB connector.

Unfortunately not, however I can purchase one for extremely cheap.

I'll call this thread answered for now, if it doesn't work I guess I'll make a new one.

edit: forgot about my blackberry charger, however its connected to the mains and didn't work. Oh well I guess I'll take this to XFX support.

What kind of power supply do you have? How many watts does it have?

The one thing I did not see posted - is power connected to your GPU?
