Samsung ML 1740. Every time I Turn on it warms up fine. When I press the print button the lights go off and it is dead. I plugged it directly into the wall socket. Switched the USB connections around. No go.

I don't know how else to describe it.
I turn it on and I hear the motor as it warms up. The status light are on.
I click on print.
the motor turns off and the lights go out.

When I bring up the window for the printer, it says it is printing.
"default printer" is checked.
"print offline" is not checked.
I delete the job because it did not print.

I turn it off and start over.
same thing.
the lights go out and the motor stops when I try "print."

It could be problem with thermal sensor and/or heater unit, formatter board. In each situation you need to visit priter service.

1. Thermal sensor - located near heater - prevents overheating (in case of high overheating will shoutdown your printer)
2. Heater - overvoltaged (+etc).
3. Damaged formatter board (its printer mainboard).

As far as I remember Samsung ML-1740 can print without need of receiving data from PC. PRESS AND HOLD "CANCEL" button on printer until LEDs start to blink. If testpage is printed withouth issues repeat it few times (page after page). If printer will turn itself off = opt 1,2 or 3. If not opt 3.
