Hello there Toms hardware community

My friend is new to computer science or PC hardware as a whole, and he asked me to do a build for him. He wants to record minecraft(with high res shaders on) and some other games at a playable fps while recording them. Now, given that we both live in Australia, we overpay for hardware parts,

its from the MSY QLD online store, http://www.msy.com.au/qldonline/
So far, this is the build, and his budget is around $1250 under
CPU=Intel Core I5 4460
GPU=Sapphire R9 280 3gb OC
Mobo=ASRock Fatal1ty B85 killer
RAM=2x Kingston 8GB(2x4gb) kits, so 16gb in total
PSU=EVGA SuperNOVA 750w 80+ bronze semi-modular
Case=Thermaltake Commander MS-II

Thanks man, I had just done some extra searching and with 8gb, I put a I5 4460 in there, with a GTX 770 seems slightly better. Would you agree?

I do know about overclocking, but I haven't tried to overclock my computer right now. My friend doesn't know much about computers, so he won't know how to

Yes the GTX 770 is a more powerful card compared to the GTX 760 or R9 280.

Would the GTX 770 golden sample by Gainward be better than a Asus R9 280x DC2 TOP? I don't know much about Nvidia GPU's

If you're gaming on higher resolutions (above 1920x1080) the 280x would be a better choice. If you aren't, the two cards perform very similarly but the 770 usually has a lead of a couple of fps in game.

Thanks for all your help man. My friend should be happy with his build, then the way I see it the R9 280x with its extra 1gb of VRAM should go well with dual monitor.. :D

Heyy me again. I was just wondering if I changed the CPU to a AMD FX-8320, would it bottleneck the GPU if it was a R9 280x/290/290x?
CPU=AMD FX-8320
GPU=Sapphire R9 280 oc/Sapphire R9 290/Sapphire Tri-X R9 290x
Mobo=ASUS M5A97-EVO-R2 970
RAM=2x Kingston 8GB(2x4gb) kits, so 16gb in total
PSU=EVGA SuperNOVA 750w 80+ bronze semi-modular
Case=Thermaltake Commander MS-II

No it wouldn't bottleneck, but there are a few games which rely on strong single core performance such as Skyrim and F1 2013, Star Craft, and any older games such as oblivion which benefit from Intel's cpus.

So, with a R9 290/290x, the FX-8320 wouldn't bottlekneck?

Depends on the games you play. Some single threaded games favor Intel over AMD and you can see a noticeable increase in fps. In others there's barely a difference.

Thanks man, looks like the 290x will fit with the FX-8320. Thanks for all the help!
