It has probably been asked or discussed before but...

I have just bought a new laptop and it has windows 8.

I want to upgrade my standard current hard drive to a new SSD and wanted to double check that I can boot my windows 8 via the USB created back up image.

If not help or advice how to do this would be welcomed - or links to other sections on the forum that tell me more about this.

Thanks

Just download Daemon tools and insert a DVD, then burn the downloaded ISO image to CD (using the software) to create bootable installation drive, which you can stick into the DVD writer and install Windows on your SSD.

PS: Yes you can, your HDD is SATA II (And most likely your MoBo port too), but you can stick SATA III into it, it'll negotiate for the speed difference itself. There may be some performance drop however.

If you're talking about creating a system image on a USB and using it on new SSD as Windows, then no, its a system image not the OS. You'll need to have a raw OS on the drive which will be configured as the one on HDD using the system image, but the OS itself is not something which's configured.

how do i get the raw OS when its installed on a hard drive - its a new "second" hand hard drive so I dont have the CD for the system or key etc

-Download Magic Jelly Bean to obtain product key, and note it down somewhere safely.

-Download an ISO image of the version of Windows you're using, and burn it to a disc.

-Change the boo order and boot from disc, then choose to install Windows on the new SSD.

-When it asks for product key, provide it.

-Done!

NOTE: If the windows was OEM (Most likely it is), then you may have to reactivate the key (it gets locked) by asking Microsoft, they'll do so if you provide the correct reason. That won't cost you a penny.
