Best free VPN service for casual use

I want to set up a VPN for educational purposes as I am currently in an IT apprenticeship and have been tasked with looking into networking fundamentals. Of course, there is a part of me that wants to 'hide' behind a VPN so my traffic cannot be tracked back to me etc. However, my main focus is to learn how to set up a VPN so I can educate myself about how it works.
Therefore I want to use a free VPN service, so which do you reccomend? Anyone done anything similar and can offer some tips?

There are a bunch that you can get at least trials on. The ones that are free tend to have extremely low data caps on them. There are a number of free proxy like hidemyass that are free.

If you goal is to learn about this then this is a good project for you to spend the time and compare. There are a number of different protocols used for VPN so it would likely server you well to figure what advantages certain ones have over others.
