I need a soundcard for a computer with bad audio chipset

the motherboard is Gigabyte GA-8S648FX. The onboard audio is Realtek AC97. . The Realtek AC 97 is enabled in the BIOS, and it is listed with Sound and Video,etc. in Device manager.However ,there is no sound being produced when the ROM(see below) plays audio CD.
the OS is Win XP Home Ed.
the hard drive is Western Digital IDE,7400rpm, 80 GB, 80Mb cache
the audio drivers were installed from the Motherboard mfg's web site.
the ROM is an IDE, Hp CD-RW/DVD, Model 3OHC-4832K-CT2, mfg'd in 2005.
Can someone recommend an inexpensive sound card for this relic machine ,as it will not be used to go on the net, just to play Microsoft's games.
