Are there any good tools the gurus use to figure out computer hardware and software problems? Anything from physical components like Power Supply testers to software? I see a lot of computers that are having issues like slowness that are not virus or malware related but I cannot figure out what is going on. Our company is so large we just reimage if it takes longer than 10 minutes to figure out but it would be nice to have some tools and know how to use them so I can quickly diagnose issues that are beyond the obvious. 90 percent of the time it is software/OS related and a reimage will fix the issue but takes several hours and we have to backup the users data and worry about getting it all. The other 10 percent is hardware and the computer will get scrapped for parts if changing a Hard drive or RAM or PS doesn't do it. It is trail and error with hardware and would be nice to have a good tool that could diagnose it quickly.

Everyone has their own bag of tricks for getting stuff down. Your about right most of the time its software, and we don't bother with that cause its usually something small way down in the programs and it would take longer to find and fix it than it does to image it so we just image it.

For hardware, there are motherboard testers, but usually, at least what I do, is keep a good working system or series of parts and test everything with a second part. Unfortunately though this is still the best method. RAM and HDDs are the easiest to test, it takes just a second, and the others can be a bit of a pain but cause systems change so fast better methods haven't really been made.

That is what I was afraid of... Same as 16 years ago when I was in Desktop support for the first time.
