Mouse/PC freezing for a few seconds every few minutes, and at the opening of any application.

Hello, a few weeks ago my computer started randomly freezing upon the opening of any application. Usually it will freeze for a few seconds and come back with a loud crackling noise. Occasionally it will freeze the computer, requiring a hard reset. The cursor will also randomly change, and sometimes completely disappear but remain functional. Additionally my PC will occasionally have a problem starting Windows 7 on start-up. I've tried restoring my computer to a back-up before the problem began, and have run a complete virus scan which came back clean. I will greatly appreciate anyone that can help me resolve this issue! Thanks in advance for any responses!

I would guess a low-level process is pre-empting the higher-level functions such as USB, etc.

It is possibly a low-level virus such as a rootkit or maybe a defective driver or something similar.

You could do a stand-alone scan for viruses etc. 0 just to discount that option. DOn't do a scan from the OS that you are having problems with. Use something like Windows Defender Offline to prevent the rootkit from concelaing itself.

Failing that, use Windows Resource Monitor, look in the CPU tab and see if intermittently something is grabbing your CPU. On an older Intel motherboard I had, I eventually fixed a similar problem by updating the BIOS (just to run into a different issue, but that's another and very old, boring story)...

Pay special attention to System Interrupts. in the Resource Monitor display.
