The mp3 CD my friend burned won't play in his car (but does in mine) so he wants me to burn one that works. We don't know what kind of CD player he has. Is there a universal file type that will work in all car CD players, or one most likely to work? What's the best bet for me to make the other settings? Thank you very much.

This depends on the car. If the car doesn't support MP3 then it's unlikely it'll support anything else. You'll just have to burn regular audio CDs.
