I bought an MSI 970A-G43 on eBay for a reasonable price without reading up on it first. I was planning to get a FX-8350, but i read that it "tends to catch fire" when using the motherboard I got. Can I use this processor if its watercooled? or will that make a difference? if not, what processor would you recommend for gaming? It will be paired with the R9 270x GPU.

Solution

Doesn't matter how you cool the processor. It is a motherboard vrm issue. I wouldn't even use this board with a 6300. It is better suited for a four core like a 4300 or 4350.
FX 8350 is the right choice for your gaming needs. 6300 is still rock and rolling yet 8350's performance for gaming is required for intense graphics. And It doesn't catch fire lol.

For this processor, you need to maintain the temperature below 63, otherwise it throttles and reduces the overall performance. But the computer god has gifted us an option for a better aftermarket cooler - CM HYPER 212 EVO / Hyper 212X. Still not satisfied? Then, I recommend Noctua NH-D14. It is almost equal to water cooling.

WHen pairing with R9 270X, you need a good PSU. Corsair TX Series will be a good choice.

650W is recommended.

Admirable

OP said they already bought the motherboard...so I would advise against wasting money and buying another motherboard so soon. As my other post said...official supported CPUs list for this motherboard puts the FX 8150 as a viable option.

I've looked over the list you provided. Wouldn't the Vishera 8320 outperform the Zambezi 8150?

An 8150 would also burn this board up. Literally.

What would you recommend for this motherboard, keeping gaming in mind?
