Hello

First the specs:
I7 4770K || Maximus VI Hero Latest BIOS || HX1080 || DDR3 2400C9 TridentX || HD5450 || @ Default settings

Now, that system was working for more than 6 months except for occasional boot failures ( I had to unplug power and put back then boot again). Recently, I got a good deal on a 7970 Ghz so I am trying to make it work with the system. First try, the motherboard did not boot showing q-code slowing at 71 code then stops at A2 and beeps 3 times with no display; the VGA LED is ON. After many tries, it booted fine and I was able to benchmark but then when rebooting, same problem happened and this is where I am. I tried replacing with HD5450 or the integrated Intel 4600 and it boots fine.

The 7970 Ghz is working fine with other system and it worked once with the same PC. The PSU was recently RMAed and got a new one and the fact that I was able to benchmark the 7970 when it was working means its not the PSU but I should note that the fan on the PSU spins and then stops at boot even when the PC works with the 5450. Is that common for corsair PSUs?

I already tried switching the GPU to the 2nd PCI-E slot without success. Note that when the 5450 works, the bios shows PCI-e x8 not 16x. I am starting to think that either the remaining 8x lanes are not functioning correctly which are required for the 7970 but then, how come it booted up once? Or maybe the PSU voltages on the PCI-E 8+6 pin is not stable. How can I test PSU voltages? What setting should I put in the ohm meter?

Thanks for your input!

Hers a picture of the socket. It seems damaged on the left and since higher end cards pull more power from the socket , it need to make very good contact Il try to clean it and post the results. I now remember when I installed a watercooling system, there was some water that went in the socket somehow. Anyone know with what should I clean the rust?

I am getting one long beep followed by 3 short beeps.

I am pretty sure it is not covered by the warranty.

Why it worked once and now its not working, I don't get that. I haven't changed anything.
