I have discovered that the onboard audio is bad(no sound produced when playing audio CD/DVDs).the onboard audio is Realtek AC97.
I believe I will have to install a sound card to get any sound from an old computer(Gigabyte GA-8S648FX, running Windows XP Home ED.).
Can I install the card without having to disable the on board audio or do I need to disable it?
Does having a CD-RW/DVD-ROM make a difference in what type of sound card I buy?
Please advise.
thanks for any advice.

I'd go ahead into device manager and uninstall the drivers for the old (current) audio.....(don't delete, just uninstall initially)...boot and let them reinstall automatically, they may just be corrupt. If no good with that, then disable and uninstall. Simply changing the primary to the new audio card won't stop the old from being there and possibly causing a problem - sort of like with video cards, you always get rid of the old

All you really need to do is change the primary audio device when you've installed the soundcard. EDIT: And its drivers ofcourse.
On Windows 7 it's under Control Panel -> Hardware and Sounds -> Sound -> Playback. Select the card from the list and click Select as Standard.
That'll route all audio through the new card unless otherwise configured.

I'm on a Dutch version of Windows so the buttons may have slightly different names but it should be very close.

Vexillarius and Tradesman: thank you both ever so much. I was afraid I would have to go into the BIOs and disable the Realtek AC97. what about the motherboard? Should I remove the f_Audio cable from the header for Realtek AC97, or leave it alone?
