I'm fixing a young girls laptop. She had several PUMs and PUPs (Conduit etc). I've cleaned the laptop using hitmanpro, adwcleaner, avast, mbam pro, etc etc etc. Currently running ESET online scan. There were pretty significant toolbar addons and issues.

I had no end to problems updating her version of windows 8 until I ran DISM.exe. I was able to update the computer afterwards, then upgrade to 8.1 and again I'm having update issues. I get a failure notification just upon checking for updates, as well as wifi going on limited access for about 10 minutes afterwards. The error msgs change each time but all point to a corrupted database. Chrome, since the update, cannot load my preferences and acts downright wonky.

I have to give this laptop back tomorrow late afternoon. Once ESET is finished in a few hours, I plan on trying Fix-It and reinstalling Chrome. Any ideas or advice? I apologize for misspellings etc. I'm using an elderly android phone to write this.

Thank you in advance.

I just edited it. My phone is android 2.x so it makes problems. Permanently fix the corrupted windows update database so auto update or any update will work, as well as figure out wth is up with Chrome. I do plan on reinstalling Chrome once ESET is finished running. DISM works to temporarily "fix" the apparently corrupted update database, but this is a young girl (18 yrs old) who will not run the tool regularly, etc. After I get (I.e these are 2 of many: 80244022, 80072rf3) error msgs, and troubleshooting failed and only DISM worked (albeit temporarily ) I am at a loss. Checking error reporting shows a problem with Bonjour. But nothing that should affect the issue at hand.

It recognized the updates needed. They're downloading now but I don't trust it. One of them (a knowledge base download) may be an issue. It could well be a sync issue and that's why it wouldnt update? I'll know more shortly and post back.

The updates took. Likely it was a sync issue since she hadn't been able to use her laptop since march. I'm checking the DHCP settings, reinstalling chrome and seeing where that leaves me. Also going to set windows update back on auto and run it again to see if that solved the issue. I should say I have 2nd line tech support on the job training for 6 years. I posted here bc I was hoping someone knew quicker than I how yo repair this computer. I'm a stay at home mom of 2 who doesn't always have time to fix friends computers (but am always asked). I'll post back soon to see if my "experiments" worked.

I ran netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt to resolve the DHCP errors. The updates are "taking" even after the settings revert. Checking chrome next after 1 more attempt at updates for veracity

It worked. I only kept posting here in case it didn't and for other ppl, shitty, outdated software they use to connect to teh interwebs or not. In my unique case, following the steps I laid above may work for others. If not, I can be reached via this thread.
