Headphones Aren't Plugged In

I do not work with computers much, so please bear with me...

I have finally gotten my old computer started, but I have no speakers for it. I have a headphone set for the Xbox 360, and since it can be plugged into USB port and the headphone port, many sites say it can be used for computers.

When I plug it in, it says there are no headphones plugged in (I plug in both the USB and headphone jack). How do I make it recognize the headphones?

And if there could be something else wrong, I'll post more info if needed...

Solution
They will work on a PC as long as Windows has the correct drivers for it, which evidently your PC does not have.
In that case it will be easier and less hassle to buy a pair of PC headphones.

I have normal headphones that are for computers that aren't recognized either. I bought them for $5, so is it possible they don't have something that makes them work?

For a sound driver, I have the 'High Definition Audio Device'. Is this the right one?
