I want TO BUILD MY OWN COMPUTER THAT'S BOTH DAS AND NAS

THE SITUATION:

I have a Samsung UN55F6400 55" Smart TV. I use it mostly for watching movies in .mp4, .avi, or .mkv format. I either load the movies onto a USB stick and plug it into the back of the TV, or I stream movies over the network from a Windows 8 PC I have set up to serve media files.

THE PROBLEM:

I NEED to have the subtitles ON while watching movies. This is not a problem when I play a movie from a USB drive plugged into the back of the TV. The subtitles work fine. However, when I play the same movie file, streamed over the network, the subtitles won't play. I have tried so many different approaches to get the subtitles to play... I have renamed files. I have tried serving them from a different computer. I have changed folders and directories. Nothing matters.

THE SOLUTION

I need a machine that can serve both as direct access storage (plugging into the USB port of my TV) as well as network storage, so that I can download, serve, or share my files. This way (since the computer is plugged directly into the USB port of the TV) I would be able to see the subtitles when a movie is playing.

I have seen lots of articles on how to build NAS machines. Personally, I want to go with FreeNAS if possible. I have also seen a few (not as much) articles on how to build DAS machines. But I have never seen anything explaining how to combine the two. I am no computer genius, so I might be overlooking something simple. I can build Windows machines all day long, but that's the extent of my knowledge. Any help would be appreciated

I use Plex Media Server to stream my content. There's an option to automatically download subtitles, and so far it works great on both my TV (WiiU) and computer.

I think this solution is the OPPOSITE of what I need. The tv does not have storage, so trying to use it as a DAS would not work... would it?

I hit the wrong button and accidentally marked this as 'solved'. I meant to respond to Firewire2. The tv can see storage larger than 2GB. I have a few PNY 16GB USB sticks and I constantly fill them up. The tv sees those just fine
