Would there be a RAID configuration for this setup?

Hey, this may be a common question: If I want to install my OS on the SSD, but have all my other installations go on the HDD by default - how can I accomplish this?

Will I need to use RAID 0, partition the SSD for the OS? (Is that even possible? Are there any tutorials for this?)

If you have any other tips/advice/best practices, I would really appreciate it! Just my second time building a PC :)

Thanks!

Again, with different size drives, you lose capacity.

RAID 1 (mirror) with a 1TB and 2TB drive = a 1TB array
RAID 0 (striped) with a 1TB and 2TB drive = a 2TB array

Just use them as individual drives.

You can change the default installation folder following the instructions on this web page: http://www.thewindowsclub.com/change-default-program-files-directory-windows. Although it says that it is not recommended due to some Windows updates might not install properly if changed. For any type of RAID you should only ever use same type(s) of drives for each array. I would recommend only a single partition for the SSD.

I would recommend installing the os on ssd and just manually changing the drive letter for any programs you want to install to the hdd. If you use Steam and have it installed on the hdd it defaults all game install there aswell for example.

Don't try to RAID 0 an SSD and HDD together. You end up with the worst of both worlds, and vastly increased fail potential.

For applications, just choose which drive you want them to be installed on. Many, many application you want on the SSD.

What size SSD is it? You'd be surprised at how many applications you can fit. What really takes up drive space is a 30GB music library, or video...stuff like that.

For other stuff, see these:

Thanks for the responses folks. Since it is ill-advised, I won't do a RAID on SSD and HDD, especially with different capacities.

USAFret, I have a 120GB SSD that I installed the OS on and is my C:\. I am trying to keep my Gaming+Media on the 1TB HDD I have and installing the software that could use the speed boost/reliability of the SSD.

I guess the question then is, if I want to add a different sized HDD (2TB? 4TB?) later on, is it possible to RAID it with my 1TB HDD only? Or will it potentially mess things up, and I should just use the new HDD as an individual drive?

Thanks!
