R9 270X was what I was going for originally, at $219-300. R9 280X $329, 280 $249 on special, 7970 im not sure. I thought the 7950 on ebay was good as its a buy it now for $180, but its an old card i know. Do you think its worth it? I have a budget of $220 for the GPU and it would be nice to save $40 while getting an older but still more powerful card (maybe). Thanks

Just to clarify: AMD recently updated its range, and changed its numbering system they made some changes to the cards but they are essentially rebrands and use the earlier GPU chips.
So, the R9 270X is, to all practical intents and purposes a HD7870GHz, the R9 280 is the HD7950 Boost and the R9 280X the faithful HD7970, the main difference is the inclusion of Trueaudio.
I'd say you're on the money with either the R9 270X or HD7950, for a new system I'd opt for the 7950/R9 280, the extra 1Gb of memory they carry is already handy in some games and is going to become essential for high settings in the future.
Don't look at the R9 280X or HD7970 unless they're cheap, a FX6300 is already on its limits with the HD7950, anything faster would just be wasted money (CPU bottleneck).

As always when purchasing off E-bay, check the sellers feedback, long established traders with plenty of positive feedback are generally trustworthy and are more likely to be helpful if a problem arises.

Thanks heaps! I wont be buying this until after Christmas so there may be better deals on other newer cards. I am planning to use 8GB RAM, 1TB Seagate Barricuda (games, files, videos, applications etc), a 60GB SSD (will that be enough for Windows 8.1/9?). Not sure about motherboard, case, psu etc yet. As always, by the time I have enough money for it, there will be new technology and cheaper older stuff. BTW my parents just bought an early 2008 iMac 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM, 250GB HD and a radeon 2600 Pro for $400 on ebay. It should arrive by post tommorrow so im kinda excited about that. Sorry for the long post but yeah thanks heaps!
