Okay, I'm an idiot. I was opening up an old laptop that appeared to be on its last legs, with a fan that simply never even turns on, in order to see if the fan was clogged.

In opening up this laptop and lifting up the keyboard, I applied a bit too much force and damaged the internal flat cable that connects the power button to the guts of the circuitry.

At the power button end, it is all attached, but looks a little iffy. One or two prongs look a little mangled, and the copper seems like it wants to snap pretty soon.

At the laptop end, however, the flat connector pulled straight out of the plastic housing.

I have the flat bare cable, the (now isolated and unattached to anything) simple piece of tiny black plastic that (I think) used to be attached the cable and went into the white plastic housing on the circuit board, and then of course the circuit board, where I can't get the flat cable to reattach and stay put.

I'm not quite as dumb as this incident makes me look, so if anyone has any suggestions for fixing this up, I welcome them and will proceed with due care.

Have I rendered this cable unusable by separating the ribbon from the black plastic piece?

Is this considered an easily replaceable part, provided I exercise greater caution going forward?
