Welcome to the community, Scottyboyy!

I suggest you backup that data on your external before you precede with any further troubleshooting.
What is the model of your external HDD and do you hear any unusual noise/sound coming from it?
I'd suggest to try a different USB cable first because this may be insufficient power issue.
Since you already tried different computers and it's still giving the same effect, I think it might be a corruption in the file system of the HDD. Basically the TV reads the HDD differently and doesn't notice the file system errors that bother the desktops/laptops. Maybe even your TV is using a different file system that Windows can't access.
Can you open and see the file system of your external through the Disk Management tool somehow?

A must: Back up your movies and TV shows ASAP!
Keep me posted for further assistance!

Hi again,

I'm sorry to hear you are still struggling with this. :/
Can you see your external HDD in Disk Management when you plug it in your computer?
I'm not sure you tried to access it that way yet. Can you see the file system of the drive there and let me know?
You say your laptop freezes but if it still detects it, I suggest to check the drive with Command Prompt.
Search for RUN in the START menu (run it as administrator)
Then type cmd, after it opens type chkdsk x: /r (where 'x' is the drive letter of your external HDD).
This way Windows will check your drive and fix/repair any bad sectors on it (if there are any).
It might take some time until the scan is complete, so just be patient.

Keep me posted with the results of it.
