AHCI primary, need data from old XP drive

Hello,

I recently upgraded to an SSD which I have configured to use AHCI in the bios. Windows loads with no problem except that it won't recognize an old internal drive that was previously recognized when set to IDE.

The old IDE hard drive has an XP installation on it and I'd like to get the data off of it. I'm know this has something to do with the AHCI bios configuration that I am now using.

In "Computer Management", the disc is visible but listed as "Unknown" and "Not Initialized". Trying to initialize fails with "Incorrect function".

Running "diskpart> list disks" also shows the disk with an online status but its size is 0B.

Is there any way I can get access to this drive without reformatting it, attaching it to a new pc, or reverting back to IDE in my bios (which I'm pretty sure wouldn't do me any good because windows on my ssd probably wouldn't load)?

Thanks,
Lance

IDE or AHCI has NOTHING to do with reading a non boot drive. That only affects you if your boot drive is one and you change it to another.

Im assuming its a sata drive still at least right? Almost spunds like something is wrong with the drive it self. Download the crystal disk info in my signature. Download the standard installer and run the program. See if it sees your other drive and if its good or not.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think I may have misled you though. Maybe its my ignorance of the difference between AHCI and IDE configurations. I read your solution as a physical connectivity solution, am I right? The drive is physically connected using SATA, but the bios is configured for AHCI, not IDE. And the BIOS can see the drive. So I don't think its a physical connectivity problem.

I think option one might work since it supports SATA, but I was hoping for a software solution. :)

Yes, its a SATA drive and I'm pretty confident the drive works. Prior to switching to AHCI, my setup was an SSD with the old XP drive setup as a slave, working fine. As soon as I switched it to AHCI and reinstalled windows on the SSD, the slave drive stopped showing up.

I'll try crystal mark though just to eliminate that as a possibility.
