My system:
i7 3770k
Stock intel fan
Radeon 7850
XFX PRO550W power supply
8gb G.Skill RAM
ASUS P8Z77-VLX

Recently my CPU temp has been running very hot even when idle. I have around 60c when idle and when playing games like Guild wars 2 and Battle field 4 im reaching upwards of 100c. I need to find the problem soon!

EDIT: its even got to the point where my PC crashes (blue screen).

More about : cpu running hot

Yes thats a little hotter then it should be. Make sure to have good intake airflow for fresh cool air. When installing the fan, did you accidentally touch the thermal paste that was pre applied? Did you lift it off and place it back down? that could introduce air bubbles and retain heat longer. I would apply the paste again and be sure to clean off residual paste from the prior application with rubbing alcohol and a coffee filter.

Another possibility is dust. even if there isnt a glob of cat hair on the heatsink. check the intake fan filters as they can be pretty clogged up. remove them and run them under water and let dry. otherwise the fans would be trying harder for less airflow and more restrictive noise.

do not operate your pc. such operating temps are dangerous.you need to reseat the cpu cooler and replace thermal compound. however, you have an unlocked cpu with overclocking ability and and a solid psu. you can make good use of an aftermarket cooler! cm 212 evo is rater cheap and capable!

I have reapplied the thermal paste about a month ago when the problem arisen. Though I did not remove the dry paste from the first application.

Thats the problem right there. I once replaced the thermal paste from my 280x but I had no rubbing alcohol and i rubbed it down as clean as i could but my temps went up 12c at least. So it needs to be cleaned. the side gunk doesn't matter as much if at all but the surface of the cpu needs to be able to eat off of and so does the heatsink.

''I did not remove the dry paste from the first application
'' that is the source of the problem. reapply after clearing the cpu and cooler surface with isopropyl alcohol!

Sorry but what is Isopropyl alcohol? and how do I do this?
would it also not be better to just get a better fan?

Ya you could get a better fan but either way you still need to clean the cpu with rubbing alcohol. wipe the chip down with a dry coffee filter. then use the cleaner on the coffee filter and use the mildly saturated filter to continue wiping down the cpu until no thermal paste shows up on the filter. do the same for the intel heatsink and your temps will drop a lot.

I will try this, thanks.

anytime, these chips are really expensive and I'm glad we could help.
